Meme: Fanfic Q and A

Meme yoinked form Lana and [livejournal.com profile] capn_mactasitc, because I’m procrastinating on my [livejournal.com profile] heroes_bigboom story, and I feel like I haven’t posted something in 4evah.

1. How about a brief introduction?

Okay. I’m an American woman (like The Guess Who song, cue “get away from me” joke) and a professional theatre artist. My other creative outlet is the fan fic. Obviously.

2. What got you into fanfiction (and/or adopting muses)?

Let’s be straight: Jill was always into make-believe. My sister and I would write stories about our favorite super heroes characters (Remember back when the X-Men cartoon was on? Loved that.) and pass them back and forth at school. Yes, that’s what I was doing during study hall. So I guess I’ve been writing fanfic since I was a kid… Although I never really thought of it that way. I came back to really writing fanfic after college.

3. What kind of fanfiction do you write?

Dark. Scary. Sexually deviant. Very rarely have I written a fic that doesn’t require warnings. Yeah, I’m a bad person.

4. What is your most popular fic/muse, and why do you think people like it so?

People really seem to like The Philosopher’s Stone, which is funny considering that it’s very different from my usual stuff. I suspect people like that one because it could actually fit into canon. I also got a lot of good feedback for Love’s the Burning Boy and In the Forests of the Night, but to be fair, that may just be because they went on f o r e v e r. Like more than six months.

5. Forget other people, what is the fanfic/post/prompt you've written that you're most proud of?

I think it’s got to be the Love’s the Burning Boy/In the Forests of the Night series. I poured a lot of love into that universe. Although I was really excited to write The Secret’s in the Telling, because writing something in a new fandom is always a rush. Also, I’m strangely fond of Let the Punishment Fit the Crime, which is unabashedly kinky porn. That’s how I roll.

6. Do you find writing easy? Hard? What aspects do you struggle with?

Usually I find it easy. I write during my commute, which is usually one hour in the morning and one at night. With that sort of enforced discipline, I usually get into a pretty good groove. The trouble comes when I write myself into a corner or start having trouble with a scene. Once a scene gets sticky, I definitely struggle in getting it unstuck.

7. Do you write for the same pairings/characters?

In some fandoms, I only have love for one or two characters. In other fandoms (Heroes, hello!) I play with lots of different pairings and characters.

8. Write a few sentences of your favorite pairing or character.

Peter slid up beside Nathan as silent as a cat. “How’s the scotch?”

Nathan didn’t take his eyes off the crowd milling around the courtyard below the balcony. “Fair. I’ve had better,” he said. He was watching a woman with dark-hair dance with one of Dad’s friends. He liked the way she moved. Beside him, Peter adjusted his bowtie and sighed dramatically. “Bored already?”

Peter shrugged. “No one here I care about. Country club members.” He waved a hand at the crowd below.

“Be good,” Nathan said warningly. “If you ruin Ma’s garden party…” he trailed off. Angela’s wrath needed no explanation.

“Don’t worry. I’ll behave.” Peter leaned against the metal banister, nudging closer to Nathan than was necessary. “If you’ll do something for me.”

Nathan rolled his eyes. “I’m not here to entertain you, Peter.”

Peter pressed in closer, and whispered, “Meet me out behind the boathouse in five minutes and let me suck your cock, and you won’t hear another peep out of me all night.”

Then he was gone, and Nathan was left alone, blood rushing to his groin as Peter’s words swirled in his head. He cast one last glance at the dark-haired beauty below before throwing back the rest of his scotch. The woman would have to wait.

9. Are there any fanfiction trends/cliches you hated?

None come to mind. I mean, other than the usual stuff, like rampant Mary Sue-age. Y'know what, I hate the trend of using warnings for EVERYTHING. Okay, please warn for important stuff like character death or rape, but one doesn't need to warn for sex. If it's rated NC-17 and says Sylar/Peter, it's slash. There's going to be sex. 'M just sayin.

10. Are you guilty of any of the trends you hate?

I’m all about clichés. As least, as it relates to non-con. Fuck-or-die situations, crazy hurt/comfort scenarios. Guilty as charged.

11. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Do you still write for it?

After college, the first fanfic I wrote was an Oz/X-Men/Law and Order SVU Crossover. Seriously. Stop looking at me like that! But I’ve loved and lost a number of fandoms over the years: Oz (Hot men, angst, and canon slash? Yes please.), CSI (Nick! Greg!), Buffy (Spike *sigh* Angel *sigh*)…

12. Name your OTPs and explain what is it about them you love to write.

Nathan/Peter. Their chemistry is so great, yet there’s tons of potential for angst. They hurt each other a lot. I’m getting more into Sam/Dean (Supernatural) because again with the potential for angst. I also love the Adam/Peter dynamic, and look forward to writing more of that in the future. And Sylar/Peter can be fun, too. Especially when there’s non-con involved.

13. What would you call your writing style?

Modified screenplay. I usually write the dialogue first, then have to “novelize” it to fill in what I’m seeing in my head. Why can’t the actors just perform it, damn it?!

14. Do you read other people's writing? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most?

Yes, I read lots of fanfic. I generally read within my favorite pairings, but I’ll go outside my usual fare for something that’s dark and evil or hits one of my kinks (like non-con, although let’s not speculate on what that says about me). I have lots of favorites, but hopefully those authors know who they are! I also try to be good about commenting when I like something, because I know how much comments mean!

15. Name one thing you'd love to write but have been too afraid or shy to do.

I write really hard-core kink, non-con, and incest. What would I be afraid to post? Um… fluff? Well, sometimes I feel like I do have a fearsome reputation to live up to. Roar.

16. Do you feel uncomfortable taking criticism? Or worse, do you have the dreaded bloated ego?

I’ll give it to you straight: I don’t mind criticism. It’s a stereotype that theatre folk are egotistical and sensitive, but that’s actors, yo. I like to hear nice things as much as the next gal, but if there’s something that doesn’t work, call me out. One commenter recently called me out on characterization in The Secret’s in the Telling. I read it and thought, “Yup. She’s right. Maybe I should take a look at that….”

17. When you write, is there anything that helps?

Peace and quiet. It’s so exciting when my roommates are gone for a night. Also, I find certain music very inspiring. Hence all the fanmixes for various fics.

18. What inspires you?

Well, obviously the shows themselves. Music, elements of other works of fiction, pictures, art, life, your mom. Everything.

19. Lastly, how would you sum up your fanfiction experiences and you as a writer?

Er… Being part of fandom on LiveJournal is great because it gives me a chance to hang out with a bunch of like-minded folk, which is very liberating!

20. Tag some friends, because they'll hate you for it.

My f-list is pretty small. So if you’re reading this, consider yourself tagged.
