This story was kind of like a punch in the gut. But in a good way. I loved the little snippets of realism. Especially this:

Kneeling beside him, she wants to make a joke about how he should stop getting shot—what has it been, four times now?—but she puts her hand on his stomach where the hole is, with red pouring out of it, and she can’t make a joke

I think in really horrible moments, everyone has the urge to try to lighten up the mood somehow or another, even though there's really no way to do so. Joking is a defense mechanism, and with her husband dying, I could see Niki trying to cling to whatever she could.

I also really loved this part too:

He’s standing in the driveway like he’s just another mourner come with casserole and platitudes. He nods to her, though, and there’s understanding in his eyes. Niki feels relief: thank god, at last, there’s someone who knows how guilty she is. Someone who understands how this is all her fault.

I could see Niki thinking like this. Poor thing. No matter how hard she tried, nothing in life seemed to ever work out for her. She was such a tragic figure in so many ways.

This was lovely snippet inbetween what we saw in the series. I really enjoyed this.
