Some of the lines took my breath away:

In the past day, John had begun to develop an appreciation for how Lestrade must feel: on the outside of Sherlock’s genius, begging for a glimpse of what lay within.

And his choice of "Alive" at the end? Gorgeous. I'm off to reread and savor this.
