Summary: Sam and Dean discover demons have been possessing people with special abilities that have nothing to do with magic. Peter draws a future that reunites him and Nathan with the Winchester brothers. Together they find out that specials--people whose powers come from an unusual inherited gene-- are being targeted for possession by a woman who is on the verge of breaking one of the sixty-six seals.

Sam kicked at the woodchips underneath the swing he was sitting on. They made a satisfying thunk as they sprayed across the ground.

"Don't kick a hole into the ground," Nathan warned as he came up behind Sam. "Most kids don't have legs quite as long as yours." He came and leaned against the poles of the swingset frame, sticking his hands in the pockets of his jacket.

It was getting colder out here as the sun started to set. Sam zipped up his hoodie. "Why aren't they here yet?" he asked.

Nathan shrugged. "Pete didn't give a specific time. They'll be here."

"Sure." Sam kicked at the woodchips again. He wanted to see Dean--was desperate to see him, in fact--but he was afraid, too. He wasn't sure if he was ready to face his brother yet, even after two days of brooding.

"He's fine, you know," Nathan said. "Peter said he'd used some new power, whatever it was. Dean's perfectly healthy."

"I know," Sam said. Having experienced Aaron's power firsthand, he'd had no doubt that Peter would have been able to use it on Dean once he'd had a little rest. "I trust Peter."

"Then what?" Nathan sat down in the next swing over. "We've been over this, Sam. What happened wasn't your fault."

"Then whose was it?" Sam asked. "I could have murdered Caroline. I would have."

"But you didn't. She's fine," Nathan pointed out. "Or at least as fine as anyone can be who's on her way to Level Five containment with Noah Bennet."

"I fucked up." Sam leaned back and stared up at the cloudy sky. "Everything Dean warned me about... All the times he told me this would happen...I should have listened."

"Hey," Nathan said softly. "I know a little something about rock bottom. Once you hit it, hard, you've got a really good reason to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Across the playground, movement caught Sam's eye. He and Nathan looked up at the same time to see Peter and Dean standing under the monkey bars, arms entwined. Just as Nathan had said, Dean looked fine: no gushing would, no too-pale skin, no pained look of betrayal on his face.

"Sam?" Nathan prompted.

Sam got up and went to meet his brother.
+++++

"Cool every time," Dean said, taking in the playground a thousand miles away from the hospital where they'd just been.

Peter gave him an affectionate kiss on the cheek before turning away and releasing Dean to look for their brothers. "Remember what we talked about," Peter said softly.

Dean rolled his eyes. "He's my brother, Peter."

Then, as Sam and Nathan walked up to them, I love you, man, but butt out.

"Hey," Dean said as soon as Sam was close enough.

"Hey," Sam said, eyes downcast.

Peter went right to Nathan and grabbed him in an enthusiastic hug which he punctuated with a quick kiss.

After a moment's hesitation, Dean stepped up to wrap his arms around Sam. Sam returned the gesture somewhat stiffly. "I was worried about you," Dean said gruffly.

"I'm sorry," Sam said. He made as if to pull away, but Dean didn't let him go.

"Tell me you get it," Dean said.

Sam tensed in his arms.

"Just say you understand what I'm been warning you about this whole damn time."

Sam nodded against his shoulder. "I'm sorry," he said again. His voice had a breathless edge to it that Dean knew meant he was close to tears. "I didn't--."

"Hey." Dean pulled away to hold Sam at arm's length. "We've both got darkness in us, okay? Just promise me no more lies. No more."

Sam shook his head, agreeing.

"I need your help, Sammy. I can't do this without you. So don't expect me to. If I have to come back down to hell and get your ass, I'm gonna be pissed."

Sam managed a weak smile at that. He reached out for Dean's belly, and Dean obligingly lifted up his shirt so Sam could run his fingers across the unbroken, scarless skin. "Abs of steel," Dean said.

Sam pulled him into one more hug. Dean let himself relax and be held, telling Sam all was forgiven, that there was nothing he couldn't do for him, for them, if Sam would only allow it.
+++++

How is he really?" Peter projected to Nathan.

How would you be if you'd stabbed me and tried to end the world two days ago? Nathan shot back.

Point taken. Peter went back to watching Dean and Sam embrace, and tried not to eavsdrop. He'd teleported down yesterday for a private reunion with Nathan, but he hadn't exactly advertised that to Dean while he'd been recovering. Peter supposed the Winchesters were entitled to a little privacy, too.

They both pretended not to watch until Dean and Sam turned around to face them.

"Thanks," Sam said to Peter.

"No problem."

"So." Dean cleared his throat. "You guys hitting the road? Back to the freelance special-hunting business?"

"Actually..." Peter shot a glance at Nathan, who nodded his permission. "We're going back to New York."

"New York?" Sam looked surprised. Apparently he and Nathan had had other things to talk about than the Petrellis' future plans.

"We can do some real good there," Nathan said.

"With your friends," Dean guessed.

"Well," Peter said demurely. "It's not exactly saving the world from being sucked into hell or anything, but..." He wrapped an around around Nathan's waist. "We can do more than we have been. Be more."

"What about you guys?" Nathan asked.

"There's more seals out there, so..." Dean shrugged. "No rest for the wicked."

"Yeah," Nathan said.

"So."

"So."

No one moved.

"Didn't I see a motel down the street?" Dean asked.

"Yeah," Peter said slowly.

"Well?" Dean looked to Sam, then Nathan. Sam shrugged, and Nathan nodded.

"Yeah." Peter didn't even need his telepathy for this one. "We're all on the same page."

"Good." Dean punched Sam on the shoulder, then grabbed his hand. "Let's go."

With that, the two sets of brothers headed off down the road.
