So, despite concerns regarding potential drama, I was all set to sign up for Star Trek Ship Wars, because I thought it would be nice to have consistent motivation to churn out fic, like when I used to write for [livejournal.com profile] heroes_contest or the [livejournal.com profile] lukexsylar prompts. I was agonizing over which ship to pic (because, honestly, I like lots of 'em... should I go with K/S? Sulu/Chekov? McCoy/Chekov? Kirk/Chekov? Kirk/McCoy? Kirk/McCoy/Spock?), but then I read the rules again and... подождите! "submissions rated G-R (nothing terribly graphic, please)."

Am I so shallow that I'm way less interested to commit to something where porn is not an option? When ships are mentioned, my mind just automatically goes to teh sex. I can't help it!

But it's probably for the best. I have plenty of fic commitments on my plate already, and this might have been too much.

Still... No porn? At all? :( I would like my navy of ships to be a little more full of naked shenanigans, please!

Well I have to say I'm on your side with that one - I rarely am interested in reading anything that isn't at least an R, and normally if I don't see NC-17, I'll pass it by unless someone's rec'd it somewhere.

It's not that I only want porn, but I don't like having my options limited.

(And I'm so sorry for not having time to read your fics these days - I bookmark everything you write because you've become one of my favorites, no matter what the fandom, but my RL job is taking up all my time these days and I hardly have any time to actually read!)

I know how feel. I don't write fic, but I'm way less excited about reading fic with a family-friendly rating than one that is R or above. Porn just makes the colors of the world seem a bit brighter.

BTW no porn? What the hell.

I hate things like that. Unless it's set up specifically to be gen only (but then gen could have graphic violence so...), it really gets my hackles up when people blanket ban higher rated fic. I guess it's to allow people under 18 to participate while still covering the organisers asses, BUT it comes across as ridiculously anti-sex. I'm loathe to participate in anything that suggests that sex is bad or wrong or filthy and unwanted here where the good fic is. I mean, hell, slut shaming is a big enough problem in RL, I don't want in perpetuated in happy fun fantasy land, y'know?

I have really enjoyed some gen stuff, but part of the fun of fanfic is being able to play with stuff that could never really happen in canon because network television/the MPAA would never be down with the buttsex. Eliminating graphic sex seems strange, especially when such a high percentage of fanfic is rated NC-17... Hm...

And I totally understand about real life! Personally, my writing output has been down for the past six months or so because of RL stuff. I'm sure you'll get around to it some fine day when you're in the mood for PORN! ;)

I'd venture to say that half (more?) of Trek fic is NC-17... I can understand wanting to encourage a range of ratings so it isn't a porn battle, but... veto-ing graphic sex altogether seems... Well. I guess I'm free to not participate if I don't like it, so I'll exercise that right!

I agree. As much as I adhere to the "if you don't like it, go somewhere else" strategy on the internet in general, it makes me sad to see tehpr0nz singled out for exclusion in a fic challenge community. Isn't part of the fun of this fantasy doing stuff that couldn't happen in canon for whatever reason? Isn't that why so much of fanfic (at least in certain fandoms) is NC-17 in the first place? I mean, I'm often in the position of feeling a little chagrined about my fic preferences, kinky bitch that I am, but it's surprising (and feels a bit like a slap in the face) to come across an instance of just say no to graphic sex without mentioning right up front that the challenge is a gen one... Except it's by definition NOT gen, since it's based around ships. Is that why I'm so confused?!

I mean, hell, slut shaming is a big enough problem in RL, I don't want in perpetuated in happy fun fantasy land, y'know? Yes. This. Exactly.

Yeah, it's one of those things where if it was clear in the user info that there's no NC17 allowed with a reason (whatever reason: so minors can take part or because the mods are personally uncomfortable with it), then I just say meh. But when they're not upfront about it, it gives me frowny face. :/

If "terribly graphic" is wrong then I don't want to be right

Indeed. Because what normal person would even expect porn to be acceptable?! Oh wait... That'd be me.
