brighteyedjill: Bones is pensive (ST: McCoy - where's the porn?)
After adding 1000 more words tonight to a 10,000 word fic that was "just a quick one, I swear," I have found myself questioning my life choices. Please help me judge myself with the poll below. The offending fic is Mirror!verse Kirk/McCoy, Pike/McCoy, if that's salient information.

[Poll #1672959]

ETA: Things Googled tonight in writing this fic include "thesaurus: filthy" and "futuristic butt plug." Goodnight, everybody.
brighteyedjill: Bones is pensive (ST: Spock Christmas)
It's holiday time! Although my family celebrates Christmas, I especially love New Year's as a holiday. It seems more honest, somehow, the way the Russians do it: Christmas is a Christian holiday where people go to church all night and light candles and celebrate the birth of Christ. Novy God (rhymes with "drove he road") is a pagan-y celebration where people decorate fir trees and welcome winter (and Grandfather Frost, who gets pissed when people complain about the cold, bitches) and give presents and stuff. So there's your international culture public service announcements.

But! No matter what holiday you celebrate, it's the gift-givin time 'o year! So, you likely know the drill. I'm posting a list of stuff I'd love to receive for Новый Год, and you post what you'd like to receive for your winter holiday of choice. If you see something on someone's list that you feel capable of providing and are moved to do so, huzzah! If not, there are no rules, no pressure, and no fuss/muss. So link me to your lists, and let the holiday cheer spread! (hic!)

Note: if you would like to send me something in the real-world mail, but don't have my address, PM me, and I will provide. Or, if you're being stealthy, you could ask [livejournal.com profile] jaune_chat. I bet she would tell you if you ask nicely.

Things what I would love:
* Writing notebooks. I write on the train during my commute, so I love to have something that fits in my purse to whip out when I have ideas.
* Sherlock icons, or recommendations for where to find them
* Fic recommendations for dark, angsty fic. I'm currently reading Heroes, Star Trek, Supernatural, and Sherlock, with trace amounts of Inception, Lost, and True Blood.
* Music or recommendations for music (or an iTunes gift card). I love hearing new things. To give you an example of my taste, I love everything from Broadway musicals and movie scores to acoustic folk to glam-pop. Today I'm listening to Josh Ritter, The Extra Lens, Unicorn Dream Attack, and Trent Rezonr's score from The Social Network.
* Cute knitted wrist warmers/gauntlets/whatever the kids are calling them these days
* Podfic! I love hearing a reader's interpretation of my stories. You hereby have my permission to podfic any story of mine that you want.
* Art! Want to draw me something? A picture of a character, or a scene in a fic? Or send me a pretty photograph you took of the woods? Bring it on.
* A banner or icons for Proving Ground. Or really, any Trek mirror!verse icons
* Fic! I love reading fic (er... obviously)! I left a bunch 'o prompts over at [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, (in several fandoms, even, so you should check those out and see if any catch your fancy.
* To love you, baby. So throw a link to your own wishlist my way, or link me to your [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking!

Also, let it be said that I'm not expecting anything in time for Christmas, or even New Year's. My birthday is in January, so I consider the entire first month of the year a gifting amnesty period, for me and you both. Let the mayhem begin! Er... continue!

My [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang is done!I added 40,000 words to it in 4 days, but it's done! As a testament to my terrible planning skills (or perhaps my overly-optimistic sense of ambition), my posting date was less than a week after I finished a big RL project that left me physically and emotionally exhausted. But now, I feel like I can breathe again!

In celebration, I have been gorging myself on fanfic. Om nom nom! If I missed anything awesome in the past uh... month, link me!

As often happens when my mind should be busy with other things, it thinks up entirely unrelated things that it wants me to do right now. Silly brain. But one of its suggestions started to sound interesting, so now I run it by you, dear f-list.

Do you like mashing up your television?

I'm envisioning a challenge, or maybe an exchange, called "Same Song, Different 'Verse." You build a fusion universe by bringing elements of a different movie/episode of television to another fandom. So it's kind of like the "reel" challenges (e.g. [livejournal.com profile] reel_spn), only not.

For example, I like Supernatural, and I like Star Trek. I could to do the Supernatural episode "Mystery Spot." I can either fuse the Trek characters into the Supernatural 'verse (Kirk is a desperate Sam, McCoy is "what the hell are you talking about time loop?" Dean, and Spock is obviously Castiel), or implant the plot of "Mystery Spot" into the Trek verse (they're stuck in some worm hole in which a powerful alien consciousness is causing Kirk to experience McCoy's death over and over in an attempt to inure him to its inevitability).

I'm thinking that there would probably be a prompting period, then a claiming period... Because there are just so many possible permutations of fandoms that coordinating an exchange would be crazy. Besides, I could never hope to match [livejournal.com profile] aurilly's mad matching skills on [livejournal.com profile] xover_exchange. Probably at least one of the fandoms in a prompt would have to be a television show, so that we'd be doing episode-sized plots rather than movie-sized plots. Or would it be better to limit it to television fandoms only?

Does that sound like a terrible idea? What you participate in such a challenge, if it existed?

So now the [livejournal.com profile] remixredux09 is beginning. Fear it. I do. But that's only because I have too many challenges going on as it is. But this one is awesome.

It's basically a chance to play around in someone else's sandbox. You're assigned someone who writes in your fandom, and you get a chance to remix one of their fics. What's a remix? Technically speaking, it's more like a cover. Because Nine Inch Nails originally did Hurt, but when Johnny Cash sung it, it meant something quite different. You keep the same basic plot and characters, but you can change POV, setting, whatever, and make it a little different.

For instance, last year I took [livejournal.com profile] justholdstill's story No Surprises and wrote Feels Like Falling. Yeah, it was Harry Potter. Shut it. Also, last year, the inimitable [livejournal.com profile] poisontaster took my story Philosopher's Stone (which is NOT Harry Potter-related) and wrote Tabula Rasa.

Get the idea? Good, because I'd really like to have some Heroes folks sign up (oh, and Star Trek Reboot is a qualifying fandom, too, yay!). Be sure to read the rules, but you only have to have written 5 stories of 500 words or more (or 7 stories of 100 words or more) to qualify. It's going to be (wicked mad) fun.

I still have a couple dozen unanswered comments. I'll respond to them, I swear. Also on deck: editing my [livejournal.com profile] heroes_exchange fic, Syluke comment fic, Star Trek kink meme fic, more Kirk/Spock fic (this time with 70% more plot!), and Sweet Charity fic. Plus sleeping, work, and real life. Pshaw.

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] speccygeekgrrl. It's like a shameless, customizable kink meme...Kinda!

If you want to play, it works like this:
1. Visit the master list, select your favorite 100
2. Post your favorite 100 behind a cut in your LJ (or if you can’t pick 100, as many as you can without going over)
3. Your f-list’s job is to write you “comment pr0n” for your favorites. (Or if you can't decide, try picking a random number and challenging yourself!)
Bolded for extra-special favorites ♥

I have no idea if anyone on my f-list lives in Chicago, but here's the deal. I'm thinking of taking this class on sex writing at a local writers studio: "In this four-week class, students will analyze the role of sex in literary works, discover how and when to deftly employ a sex scene for the most potent effect, and learn how to write a powerful, effective sex scene." And they cite Jane Delynn’s The Leash (a novel involving D/s lifestyle) as one of the texts involved. So that's a good sign. And the studio is not at all skeevy. In fact, they're very reputable.

However. I am a little intimidated to take such a class all by my onesies. Because there's no way I'm copping to writing incest fanfic in a place where I may know actually people. Sex writing, maybe, but incest fanfic porn? Probably not something I should admit to in public. So I would be tweaking my characters to pass them off as original for purposes of workshopping in this class. But it would be nice to have back-up. Is this a good idea? A terrible idea? I think it could be fun, but... Reservations. I has them.
