Do I have any Chicago friends?

I have no idea if anyone on my f-list lives in Chicago, but here's the deal. I'm thinking of taking this class on sex writing at a local writers studio: "In this four-week class, students will analyze the role of sex in literary works, discover how and when to deftly employ a sex scene for the most potent effect, and learn how to write a powerful, effective sex scene." And they cite Jane Delynn’s The Leash (a novel involving D/s lifestyle) as one of the texts involved. So that's a good sign. And the studio is not at all skeevy. In fact, they're very reputable.
However. I am a little intimidated to take such a class all by my onesies. Because there's no way I'm copping to writing incest fanfic in a place where I may know actually people. Sex writing, maybe, but incest fanfic porn? Probably not something I should admit to in public. So I would be tweaking my characters to pass them off as original for purposes of workshopping in this class. But it would be nice to have back-up. Is this a good idea? A terrible idea? I think it could be fun, but... Reservations. I has them.

Date: 2009-04-23 04:46 am (UTC)I actually think this is a great idea. Approaching it from a literary persective would be absolutely fascinating, as well as constructive (although, I personally think your work is fantastic already, but you knew that). My favourite paper in college was medicine in fictional literature - completely useless long term, of course, but so interesting. I'd love to do more non-work related study, but for the next 18 months that's completely out of the question. So, I'm very jealous!
And, who knows - you may meet some interesting people there too.
Go for it! :)

I'm a bit of an academic geek, and I certainly miss having the chance to talk literary analysis, so this definitely sounds like fun. I haven't taken a real class-like class (i.e. not something theatre-related) in years, so this would be a nice change!
And you're probably right on the interesting people track. Mwah ha ha!
