brighteyedjill: Bones is pensive (SPN: Sammy yea porn!)

I have no idea if anyone on my f-list lives in Chicago, but here's the deal. I'm thinking of taking this class on sex writing at a local writers studio: "In this four-week class, students will analyze the role of sex in literary works, discover how and when to deftly employ a sex scene for the most potent effect, and learn how to write a powerful, effective sex scene." And they cite Jane Delynn’s The Leash (a novel involving D/s lifestyle) as one of the texts involved. So that's a good sign. And the studio is not at all skeevy. In fact, they're very reputable.

However. I am a little intimidated to take such a class all by my onesies. Because there's no way I'm copping to writing incest fanfic in a place where I may know actually people. Sex writing, maybe, but incest fanfic porn? Probably not something I should admit to in public. So I would be tweaking my characters to pass them off as original for purposes of workshopping in this class. But it would be nice to have back-up. Is this a good idea? A terrible idea? I think it could be fun, but... Reservations. I has them.

That sounds like fun but I'm unfortunatly in sunny South Carolina. I have a couple Chicago friends on my own flist though. I checked to see if you know them too, but they're not on your flist, so that kinda sucks. =/

Well, you're lucky to be in SC. Because it's sunny, as you say. Chicago's nice in the summer, but uh... yeah. Winter not so much.

I went to Chicago last summer and adored it. But yeah, rough rough winter. Eek. In our defense, our seasons are messed UP though. 80 degrees in winter, 30 degrees in spring, and then 110 in summer. And each with 100% humidity. WTF, Earth?

Oh, crazy seasons. Somewhere, a polar bear is crying!

That sounds like a great class. I used to live in Joliet, but couldn't take the cold winters. Now I'm in San Antonio, and they'd NEVER have a class like that down here.

If you do end up taking it, I'd be interested in hearing how it is...although I don't really think you need a class on writing sex - you do an incredible job already!

Well thanks! I can always improve, I think. And there are certain things in the porn with which I still struggle, so a class might be nice. I love that Chicago can be hip and progressive. I mean, we've got to have something in exchange for suffering through all this winter, right?

OMG! That sounds awesome. And I would have loved to do it with you, just for fun! However, you know I don't live in Chicago (or anywhere near your fair country, in fact). If I did, I would totally be around at your place every spare weekend, drinking wine and watching DVDs. Whether you wanted me there or not.

I actually think this is a great idea. Approaching it from a literary persective would be absolutely fascinating, as well as constructive (although, I personally think your work is fantastic already, but you knew that). My favourite paper in college was medicine in fictional literature - completely useless long term, of course, but so interesting. I'd love to do more non-work related study, but for the next 18 months that's completely out of the question. So, I'm very jealous!

And, who knows - you may meet some interesting people there too.

Go for it! :)

The wonders of the interweb mean that you can come to my virtual living room and drink virtual wine and watch virtual DVDs virtually whenever you want. :D But ah, being halfway 'round the world is sad.

Medicine in fictional literature, you say? I'm a bit of an academic geek, and I certainly miss having the chance to talk literary analysis, so this definitely sounds like fun. I haven't taken a real class-like class (i.e. not something theatre-related) in years, so this would be a nice change!

And you're probably right on the interesting people track. Mwah ha ha!

Hokay. Well, I know we don't know eachother well (read: at all) but I happen to live in Wheaton which is a short 20 minute Metra ride to Chicago. Also, this class sounds really really interesting. So if you're are really desprite, hit me up with some more information about it and I'll look into it.

Yea suburbs! On the advice of all my flist, and due to my own musing, I think I will probably end up taking the class. If you want more info, you can check out the website here and register online (http://www.storystudiochicago.com/courses/writing_sex.php). Maybe I'll see you there!
