A fic meme from
speccygeekgrrl. Wow, the meme:fic ratio has really gone up recently, eh?
Post the first lines from your last 20 stories. Do you see a pattern?
1. One morning during the third year of solitude, Sylar has a dream.
2. “I can walk, dammit.”
3. “I swear it was not my fault,” Pavel said apologetically.
4. The very worst thing about this entire situation, Luke decided, was that he was going to die a virgin.
5. Chekov drifted up from dreams to see Sulu already moving around their room.
6. McCoy scowled and keyed in the command to wipe out the text of the message for the sixth time.
7. Peter spreads his legs, wanton and panting like Jim always is, but more yielding, more hungry for it.
8. “Come here, pet.”
9. “No.”
10. “Hey Elle.”
11. “You think Kirk will wrap this up by 17:00?” Hikaru muttered.
12. The Petrelli mansion had over forty rooms, so there was no earthly reason why Peter and Gabriel should still have to share, but their mother’s gentle hints that the twins “be more independent” and “pursue their own interests” had gone unheeded.
13. Zombies.
14. “You need your hearing checked, Jim?"
15. Ensign Pavel Andreievich Chekov slid a finger across the conn, tracing the trajectory he’d calculated to take the Enterprise to her next destination.
16. Cadet Kirk smirked at the message on his padd.
17. McCoy’s breath hitched in his throat, and Jim just had to get out of his chair at that evidence of weakness.
18. Luke jumped back as the cell door rolled open.
19. “Captain.”
20. Nathan slugged back another shot of tequila and came up with a grin on his face.
Things I noticed... I am fond of short sentences, and one-word sentences in particular.
Also, dialogue. Lots of dialogue. Which makes sense. My fics almost always have a ton of dialogue in them, and it's almost always the first thing I write. I'm a little embarrassed that some of these are not so snappy, significant, or important. First lines and last lines are important, damnit, and they should be excellent little jewels on their own! Most of these, not so much. Though I gotta say, still fond of #4, which is the opening line of this fic. It was the first line I wrote, which is saying something; it's rare for me to start at the beginning.
So, do the meme! Show me your first lines!
